Avoiding Holiday Heating And Plumbing Problems

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0 | November 8th, 2018

The holiday season is meant to be a peaceful and restful time with loved ones. But we all know that’s not always the case. From the stress of shopping crowds to getting everything done around the house before the family arrives, life can feel a little stressful. Holiday plumbing problems may be the last thing on your mind, but if you take care of it ahead of time, you’ll have one more reason to give thanks at the dinner table.

Plumbing Disasters During The Holidays

The house is full of family: kids, elders, in-laws. The kitchen is at full capacity and your bathrooms are being used much more than usual. What could go wrong?

  • Your dishwasher and kitchen sink are struggling.
  • Your toilet is running or, even worse, overflowing or not flushing at all.
  • Cold weather means frozen pipes. If you’re traveling for the holidays or at home when it’s very cold, this could lead to plumbing problems.
  • Overusing the water heater puts your system at risk and it malfunctions when you need it the most.

These are all common issues experienced during Thanksgiving through the holiday season. Below are some tips to sidestep some of those issues.

How To Avoid Holiday Plumbing Issues

Stop plumbing issues in their tracks this holiday season with these tips:

Be Plumbing Aware – A homeowner should always know the plumbing system throughout any house. Where are the off valves located? When was your last maintenance update?

Be Careful With Fats And Grease – We’re not just talking about the holiday diet here. It’s important to toss any cooking oils, fats or greases into the trash rather than down the drain. In fact, it’s best to not put any solid food down the drain that could damage the garbage disposal or sink.

Watch What Is Flushed – Do what you can to prevent family members from flushing strange items down the toilet. Only toilet paper should be flushed, otherwise, your pipes could clog and cause an overflow.

Stock Up On Plungers – Do a quick double-check to make sure all of your restrooms are equipped with plungers. It’s a simple fix, but making sure the basics are all in place can sometimes be overlooked during busy times.

Tips To Avoid Heating Problems During The Holidays

The other important function of your plumbing system is the heating. A malfunctioning water heater could dampen anyone’s holiday spirit. Here are some tips to avoid these water issues:

Turn Up Water Heater – Before the holiday guests arrive, it’s recommended you turn up the water heater a bit. You can go as high as degrees 125 degrees during busy times, any hotter may be dangerous. Be sure to set a reminder to put it back at regular temps after the guests have departed.

Stagger Shower Times – The house is full of relatives and that means your showers are working overtime. It’s best to stagger shower times with 10 minutes or so in between. That will prevent cold showers. Also, try washing dishes or doing laundry at night, conserving warm water when your guests need it most.

Inspect Washing Machine Connections – Make sure your laundry machines are working properly. That means double-checking hoses and connections. Confirm there are no cracks. You may even switch to a stainless steel hose before guests arrive.
